"Rental car", "taxi", "chauffeur service" — in everyday speech these terms are often used interchangeably. Legally they are not. Depending on the term, anyone booking a trip gets a different service, a different price and a different degree of reliability. Here are the differences, without a thicket of legal paragraphs.
Three terms, three things
The rental car from the car-hire firm
This is the case most people think of first: you rent a vehicle and drive it yourself. No driver, no passenger transport, just the provision of a vehicle. None of the following has anything to do with this — the term only causes confusion because German passenger-transport law uses the same word differently.
The taxi
A taxi may wait at ranks, be hailed on the street, and is subject to the duty to carry and to fixed tariffs. It is designed for spontaneous individual trips within an operating area. Availability yes; plannability and presence rather not.
Private hire with driver — and the chauffeur service
This is where it gets interesting. Private hire with driver under the German Passenger Transport Act (§ 49 PBefG) is the basis for pre-booked trips with a chauffeur. Unlike the taxi, such a vehicle may only run on prior order and returns to its operating base after the job. There are no fixed tariffs — the price is agreed. On exactly this legal basis the chauffeur service takes place: pre-booked, plannable, with a set vehicle and a set driver.
In short: a chauffeur service is not a "better taxi" but a different form of transport — built for reliability rather than spontaneity.
What makes the chauffeur service in practice
The difference shows less in the legal text than in the experience:
- Plannability. Your vehicle is at the agreed place at the agreed time. No waiting at a rank, no "in ten minutes".
- A set driver. The same chauffeur, knowledgeable of the area, discreet, English-speaking on request — no change mid-trip.
- A defined vehicle. You know in advance what you are travelling in. With us that is usually a factory-new Mercedes V-Class.
- Discretion and presence. For business appointments, receptions or special occasions, how you arrive matters — not only that you arrive.
When does which make sense
If you need a short trip across town right now, the taxi is unbeatable. For a business appointment, an airport transfer with lead time, a trip where punctuality and presence matter, or several stops over the day — the chauffeur service plays to its strengths. You book once and need not worry about anything else.
Licensed, insured, plannable
Passenger transport with a driver requires a permit.
